Putnam County New York Seal

Putnam County New York makes it pretty easy for contractors to get licensed. With some guidance it should be a quick and easy process. Putnam County has different licenses for Home Improvement, Electrical, and Plumbing. Home improvement licenses are the most common we help with. Both the plumbing and electrical license process are similar with a skills test if you are not licensed elsewhere.

Before you start the process of getting your home improvement license, here are a few things to keep in mind. You will need to secure insurance, a bond, worker’s compensation insurance, or a work comp waiver as well as pay some fees to Putnam County. Most of this will be completed by you, but you will also need a notary and an insurance broker.

What is it going to cost me?

The Fees for licensing are $250 payable to Putnam County Commissioner of Finance (via check or money order only. )

What do you need to do?

Step 1

Visit the putnam county home improvement website and print your new application.

Where Do I Click for My Home Improvement Application

Step 2

complete pages 2 and 3 of the application.

Step 3

It’s now time to start working on the checklist from page 1 of the application.
Make a Copy of your vehicle registrations
Make a copy of your photo ID
Make a copy of your DBA or business certificate
Take a Selfie and email it to contractors@putnamcountyny.gov ( e-mail MUST include Company Name, Last Name First Name and be submitted in jpg format )
Get your affidavit of compliance notarized. *DO Not sign until you are present with the notary*
Certificate of Liability – You will need to contact an insurance broker to get general liability insurance, and request a certificate made out to Putnam County.
License Bond – $25,000 limit 2 year term – Take care of this while speaking with your insurance broker.
Worker’s Comp Form C105.2 or U-26.3 OR Work Comp Waiver CE-200 – Once again you will need to contact an insurance broker or you can get the waiver yourself from the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board.

In short, once you have printed and completed the app you might as well get in contact with your insurance broker. He or she should be able to help with the copies needed, as well as the insurance forms and bond. But you are on your own for the selfie.
